Hi, I'm Daniel Hopsicker. Standing in downtown Venice, Florida, in the center of what I like to think of as Terrorist Time Square. Behind me is Burgundy Square, where local Venice Yellow Cab drivers told the FBI that Mohamed Atta and Marwan Al-Shehhi, visited often with what they called "their best friend," a man by the name of Mecham Chalms (sp?). Mecham Chalms (sp?) was a Lebanese immigrant who owned the convenience store on the other side of the street. Mecham Chalms (sp?) disappeared the day after the September 11th attack. His convenience store has sat abandoned since that day. But what we discovered is that Mecham Chalms (sp?) wasn't just an anonymous Arab operative, who burrowed into the woodwork until he did his job and then slipped away one step ahead of the law. No, Mecham Chalms (sp?), we discovered, had been a partner in a gambling boat that had parked itself illegally in the harbor here in Venice for over a year in the mid-90s despite the City, the County, and the State's best efforts to get them to leave. When we discovered this we thought, that takes a lot of clout, way too much clout for an anonymous Lebanese immigrant. So we asked ourselves, "Where did Mecham Chalms (sp?) get that clout? Where did he get his juice?"
When it comes to 9/11 and the pitiful state of the investigation so far, it's clear that whoever said people who know don't talk knew whereof they spoke. When an aviation insider in South Florida spoke candidly recently about what he saw during the runup to the 9/11 attack, it wasn't what he said that was so shocking, it was that he didn't mind if we used his name. |
