Chapter first, incarnation of Bamon and description of Pelokio.
Biach, charmed by what he had just heard, was piqued with curiosity, and approaching Chumantou again made new requests and said to him: "I heard, Lord, the story of Isle Zombou. Tell me now about the one called Pelokio, and what goes on there."
Chumantou.
Chumantou. To the east of the Chumerou mountain, and to the north of Tisle Zom-bou, is located Tisle Pelokio, twice as large as Tisle Zombou. We also see the four Castes there. Here are the names of the main mountains and the main rivers which are in Mounikouto mountain. Brozokouto mountain is in the north. In Touest is the Indrokouto mountain. To the north, the Chuporbo mountain. To the north-west the Hironnio mountain. And to the south-west the one called Meguomalasso. East of Tisle flows the Onguiro river. The Chabitri river flows to the north, and the Chupronia river to Touest. The King of this island is called Idonosito, and his son Prioboito. The same sun that lights us up also lights them up, but his situation means that the days are longer there. On the highest point of Tisle, and on the croup of the Chumerou mountain, is the Veikuntan, or the place where Narajon stays. You gave this Narajon 4 arms, and you made him the Supreme Being. You also spoke of the Chuarguam where the demigods make their stay. You told of their birth and their actions. You did more, you have not even respected the Supreme Being in your fictions. You have attributed different births to him. You made him play different characters, all incompatible with a being who has no body or figure, and equally unworthy of him. The peoples who love the marvelous, and who do not know how to discover the false, are listened to with greed, and you have thrown them into the grossest errors.
Biach.
Biach. I know that Cochiopo, inhabitant of Chuarguam had two wives: one called Oditi, the other Diti. Oditi gave him two children, the eldest of whom called Indro enjoyed the Royalty of Chuarguam. But Boli dispossessed him and drove him from his estates. Oditi, outraged to see her eldest son stripped of his condition, sought to remove by artifice and return to her son a crown that she could not remove by force. She addressed this to her younger brother and said to him: "My son, you must use skill [and deception] to put your brother on the throne and give him back the crown which was taken from him." What hope, mother, Bamon replied, that I can come to an end, and is there any artifice that can succeed for me? You are bawdy by birth, said his mother. In this capacity you must not be ashamed to ask Taumóne. It is specific to your state, so take in your hand a vaze, a stick, a parasol, and go and present it to yourself in this state in front of Boli. I leave it remain in your know-how. Bamon carried out his mother's orders and set out on his way. Boli, seeing him coming, asked him who he was, where he came from, and what he wanted. I am a great King, he replied, Brame by birth, son of Cochiopo and Oditi, reduced to the last misery. I don't have an inch of land to live on, nowhere I can retire. If you want to give me some, I will owe you my life. This is the subject that brings me close to you. Le Roy and Bindaboli his wife, delighted to find an opportunity to please a Brame, promised to give him all the land he wanted. Good, I have what I claim, he said to him himself, and asked to be given only 3 feet of land. I gladly give you what you asked for, said the King, I would have given you much more, he added, smiling, if you had asked me. And indeed of what use can such a small space of earth be for you? But, he added softly, a poor man and a man of nothing could carry his desires any further. Bamon having obtained his request, from small and dwarf as he was, suddenly became great, with one of his feet he covered all the earth, and with the second he carried into the Chuarguam and filled it. Finding no more room where to place the third, he grabs Boli and says to him, mistreating him, tell me now where you want me to put the third foot. Put it on my head, replied the King, since everything is already filled, and there is nowhere else you can place it. I have what I wanted, replied Bamon smiling, therefore give up your place and your crown, and go to Patalan to make your home there henceforth. You will find there the serpents who also make their stay there, and you will take care of them, as of your own children. How to stay in a place without any sensitive body, and how to support myself there, said Boli, and what will my nourishment be there? I will be there even to take care of the toy, replied Bamon; for your nouriture you will be all that will be done on the land of sacrifices defended by the Vedans. This is how Bramma the Supreme Being, appeared on the earth under the figure of Brame and under the name of Bamon.
Chumantou. So tell me, dazed man, what is this Kochiopo and this Oditi that you say have given birth to the Supreme Being. Are they not men like the others? And the god who is pure spirit in his nature, who is eternal in his essence, would he have lowered himself to the point of annihilating himself in a woman's womb to clothe himself there of a human figure? What reason could he therefore have had? If this Bamon was the Supreme Being, Boli, like the rest of men, was his creature and you do not blush to represent this Supreme Being to us in the posture of a suppliant, in front of one of his creatures, making him his humble supplications, to obtain she a few inches of soil! How dare you say it? How could you think that? Moreover, if he had had a predilection for Indro and if he had wanted to restore his kingship to him, could he not have done so by an act of his will, and was it necessary that this god, who is the Truth in essence, used deceit and lies to come to the end of his designs? You make, finally, assign to Boli for food all that will be done of sacrifices defended by the Vedans, but these kinds of sacrifices are made on earth. The offerings, like the victims who are immolated there, are also consumed there, and nothing descends into hell. Have you therefore completely lost your mind, or have you come to this point of impiety not to be ashamed to make the Supreme Being play the character of deceitful and dissenter? What is strange and surprising is that the people believe you on your word and indulge in such reveries. Meditate on the truths that I am telling you. Reduce them in practice, and finally stop deceiving men and throwing them into Terror. It is only on this condition that I will continue to explain Vedan to you, because if you remain in the same feelings, you are incapable of hearing it, and it would be the prostitute to teach it to you.
At these words Biach, penetrated with shame and confusion, sought to appease the anger of Chumantou, and said to him, humbling himself and prostrating himself before him: have pity, Lord, on my weakness. Forgive my misgivings. An unfortunate fate has so far fascinated and dazzled me, and I myself am surprised to have given in to such extravagances.
