Secret Service agents protecting President Joe Biden's granddaughter Naomi opened fire after three suspects tried to break into an unmarked Secret Service vehicle.

The agents, assigned to protect Naomi Biden, 29 and the daughter of Hunter Biden, were out with her in the Georgetown neighborhood late Sunday night when they saw the three people breaking a window of the parked and unoccupied SUV, the Secret Service said in a statement.

Around 11:58 pm ET, one of the agents opened fire, but no one was struck by the gunfire. The incident took place near Naomi Biden's Georgetown home, NBC News reported.

The three people were seen fleeing in a red car, and the Secret Service said it put out a regional bulletin to Metropolitan Police to be on the lookout for it.

'During this encounter, a federal agent discharged a service weapon and it is believed no one was struck,' the Secret Service said.

'The offenders immediately fled the scene in a red vehicle and a regional lookout was issued to supporting units. There was no threat to any protectees and the incident is being investigated by the DC Metropolitan Police Department and the Secret Service.'

Naomi Biden, the daughter of Hunter Biden and his first wife Kathleen Buhle. As President Biden's oldest grandchild, she receives Secret Service protection as a direct member of the first family.

She lives in Washington D.C. with her husband Peter Neal and works at the law firm Arnold and Porter.

It is unclear if Naomi Biden heard the shooting but she was made aware of the incident afterward, sources told ABC News.

Naomi and Peter stayed at the White House ahead of November 2022 wedding there but now have their own home in the city.

They are often at official events and, most recently, attended last month's state dinner for the prime minister of Australia.

Washington has seen a significant rise in the number of carjackings and car thefts this year. Police have reported more than 750 carjackings this year and more than 6,000 reports of stolen vehicles in the district.

On Friday night, there was an armed carjacking in Georgetown. A man and woman were getting into their car when a group of five suspects drove up next to them. The group stole the car and fled the scene.

Public officials have been at risk.

Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas was carjacked near the Capitol last month by three armed assailants, who stole his car but didn't physically harm him.

Additionally, violent crime in Washington has also been on the rise this year, up more than 40% compared with last year.

In February, Rep. Angie Craig of Minnesota was assaulted in her apartment building, suffering bruises while escaping serious injury.
