Jonathan Farkas, a New York real estate heir from the family that owned Alexander's department store, had a long-standing relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, dating back to at least 1982 when they met in the Hamptons.
Farkas considered Epstein one of the smartest people he knew and often sought his investment advice, describing him as "brilliant" and "worshipped" from a business perspective.
He maintained loyalty to Epstein, visiting him in prison and stating in 2011 that the criminal allegations against Epstein were a side of him he did not recognize.
In 2017, during the first Trump administration, Farkas reached out to Epstein for personal advice regarding a woman he was seeing outside his marriage.
He described her as intelligent and kind but expressed doubts due to his age and height.
Epstein responded cryptically, warning Farkas that the woman was "not trustworthy at ALLL" and later described her as an "alcoholic . drugs. unstable . consumate liar. CAREFUL".
When Farkas asked if she was a "2 timer" or "a hooker," Epstein replied "Worse" and reiterated his warning.
Farkas also engaged Epstein on political matters. On the day before the 2016 U.S. presidential election, he told Epstein, “I think you are going to have a wonderful life from now on,” signaling expectations of benefits from Trump’s anticipated victory.
Epstein later told associates he was “in palm with the trump crowd” after Trump’s election.
Farkas’s wife, Somers Farkas, was appointed to the White House Fellowship Commission and later became U.S. ambassador to Malta during Trump’s second term, a position she reportedly earned in part through political fundraising ("bundling").
Additionally, Farkas was involved in broader social and political circles connected to Epstein, including interactions related to Trump administration figures and Epstein’s network of wealthy and influential contacts.
