SVU thanks the
generous donors who support our school and students.
Stanford "Bud" Stoddard (Stanford C.
Stoddard)
In 1997, Stanford
"Bud" Stoddard first became involved with Southern
Virginia University by donating money for scholarships, ground acquisition,
maintenance and beautification of Main Hall, and many other projects. He commissioned the Ann D. Stoddard Living Center in memory
of his late wife. This fall, Brother Stoddard and his current wife, Dixie,
have been very kind to SVU. Their generous funds allowed for the creation
of the new Stoddard Activities Center and the installation of four
modular homes for additional student housing. The Stoddard Activities
Center was dedicated in October, and in December it was the location
for a special fireside featuring Sister Susan W. Tanner, General
President
of Women's Organization. The Stoddard Center is now used for many
activities, including movie nights, dinners, graduation, and
student dances. Brother Stoddard's gifts will continue to bless the
lives of
hundreds of students and their families for years to come.
William P. Haslam
William P. Haslam joined the ranks of Southern Virginia's supporters in
2000 by allowing the university to use one of his vacated properties.
The expansive 19,000 sq ft. space, once occupied by a grocery store, has
hosted student dances and accommodated many of the school's needs. Mr.
Haslam recognized SVU's demand for student housing, and in 2003 he built
five townhouse-style buildings in a complex northeast of campus.
The "Carriage Townhouses" were rented to the university and have become a
favorite with the SVU family. In 2005, Mr. Haslam donated nearly half of
the real estate and all of the furnishings from the townhouses to the university, and arranged for SVU to secure ownership of the rest of the complex
through a long-term buyout agreement. Southern Virginia will dedicate
the townhouses this Spring, and rename the complex in Mr. Haslam's honor.
